Notes sur la coordination verbale et la coréférence intraphrastique en basque souletin

Abstract : For many Bascologists, if Basque is a language with "ergative morphology", its "syntax" is "accusative". To justify this point of view the phenomena of coreferencing in complex sentences and in sentences with coordinated verbs is putted forward. In these contexts the omissible noun (not repeated again) would be that referring to the single participant, with absolutive case (SP ABS), or that referring to the agent, ergative case (A ERG). This would thus concern an "accusative syntax".
By studying the conditioning of the omissibility of the nouns in the sentences with verbs coordinated by “eta” in the Basque Souletine dialect, the author realizes that this conditioning is not related to a true syntactic constraint. It is not systematically the noun with ergative case that is omitted (referring to the agent, A ERG) in the case of coreference. Conditioning is more complex: according to the sentence, it will be the semantic coherence, the fact of being the topic, the focused element, etc. If they are the (SP ABS) or (A ERG) type nouns which are more frequently not repeated again, it is that they often cumulate the following characteristics: topic, agent, and definite. This type of construction with two nouns in the same clause is rare in speech and because of the risk of ambiguity the verbal coordination with one of the two nouns not being repeated seems to be rarely employed.
