Through a personal memory, is traced the intellectual journey of the Guadeloupean historian Jean-Pierre Sainton, who died prematurely in the summer of 2023—an itinerary marked by a complex articulation between his Guadeloupean nationalist activism and his respect for the demands, both scientific and ethics, of the profession of historian. To understand the emergence of his thinking, we go back to the independence commitment of his father, one of the founders of the GONG (Group of Nationalist Organizations of Guadeloupe), who was one of the main accused during the trial which followed the riots in Guadeloupe in 1967 (Jean-Pierre Sainton was 12 years old at the time), marked by fierce repression. We then follow his university training, first in Pointe-à-Pitre then in Paris, and the beginnings of his activist life. Then we consider his gradual distancing from independence and his conversion to the rigor and demands of the profession of historian in the 1990s, when he ultimately joined the University of the Antilles at the end of the decade. His career from then on reconciles a loyalty to his Guadeloupean identity and a truly historical approach, intended to be based on great critical rigor, an exemplary approach which allowed him to develop a history that he wanted to be “comprehensive.” His place must be recognized among the most eminent historians of the Antilles.
Au fil de souvenirs personnels est retracé l’itinéraire intellectuel de l’historien guadeloupéen Jean-Pierre Sainton, prématurément disparu à l’été 2023, itinéraire marqué par une articulation complexe entre sa militance nationaliste guadeloupéenne et son respect des exigences, tant scientifiques qu’éthiques, du métier d’historien. On remonte pour comprendre l’émergence de sa pensée à l’engagement indépendantiste de son père, l’un des fondateurs du GONG (Groupement des organisations nationalistes de la Guadeloupe), qui fut l’un des principaux accusés lors du procès qui suivit les émeutes de la Guadeloupe en 1967 (Jean-Pierre Sainton est alors âgé de 12 ans), marquées par une féroce répression. On suit ensuite sa formation universitaire, d’abord à Pointe-à-Pitre puis à Paris, et les débuts de sa vie militante. Puis on envisage son éloignement progressif de l’indépendantisme et sa conversion à la rigueur et aux exigences du métier d’historien dans les années 1990, alors qu’il intègre finalement l’Université des Antilles à la fin de la décennie. Son parcours dès lors concilie une fidélité à son identité guadeloupéenne et une approche véritablement historienne, se voulant fondée sur une grande rigueur critique, démarche exemplaire qui lui a permis de développer une histoire qu’il voulait « compréhensive ». Place doit lui être reconnue parmi les plus éminents historiens des Antilles.
